Premium Agency Inc. was established in May 2003 with three people.
At our inception, the model to which we aspired was JCGL (Japan Computer Graphics Laboratory),
the company founded 25 years ago as Japan’s first CG animation production studio in 1982.
Mitsuru Kaneko, the then CEO of JCGL, wrote the following words in
his opening statement of the company’s prospectus:
“We have in Japan an animation industry, that is not only
a major facet of children’s entertainment, but which has also become
an established part of Japanese culture. However, if we look beneath
the bold facade of this industry’s initial appearance, we are faced with
the emergence of many unexpected problems regarding production costs and working conditions”.
Sympathizing with the words of Mr. Kaneko, I felt that not only
were the same problems still persisting, but now there was also a sense that they were
spreading throughout the industry we label “content”, and extending into TV, games and also movies.
In 1983, the year following JCGL’s establishment, Nintendo launched the
NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), the use of computer graphics became universal
throughout the video games industry, and Nintendo’s “Mario” took the world by storm.
Following this, SEGA and NAMCO took the lead on the world stage with their CG technology, and
“Virtual Fighter”, now permanently exhibited in the Smithsonian Institute, became the
world’s first 3DCG game. Pioneering Japanese CG technology became an object of worldwide
admiration and video games became cemented firmly into Japanese culture as a whole.
Nevertheless, if we fail to address the unsolved problems of the past,
then people 25 years from now will feel just as we do today. We need to combat such
deep-rooted issues by exploiting our creativity, sense of style and capacity for planning.
Thus we will inherit a healthier version of the wonderful culture that our forbearers battled
against the odds to bestow upon us.
At Premium Agency, our craft is to combine breathtaking 3DCG visuals with
thrilling motion and animation on screen, and to develop and evolve this through a variety of mediums,
including games, movies, TV and internet content. Our mission is to create a new style within
the digital arts industry, one that enables us to promulgate the brilliance of
Japanese creative powers across the globe.
